Archaeological Treasure Unearthed in Lyon: The Ocean Road and Monumental Gate of Lugdunum

In the heights of Fourvière, within the Loyasse cemetery, archaeologists have made an extraordinary discovery. During preventive excavations launched in 2023, the remains of an impressive monumental gate and an ancient Roman road — known as the "Ocean Road" — have been uncovered. These finds date back to the 1st century AD and offer a remarkable glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Lugdunum, capital of the Three Gauls.

Hidden beneath the modern cemetery, the site revealed not only the foundations of a circular tower over 8 meters in diameter but also a well-preserved paved roadway that once connected Lugdunum to the Atlantic Ocean. The discovery includes traces of defensive ditches, believed to have been dug during the Battle of Lyon in 197 AD to block the advance of Septimius Severus’ troops against Clodius Albinus.

Today, these exceptional remains are being carefully documented and reburied for preservation, while the City of Lyon plans future projects to showcase this invaluable heritage to the public.
